DAZZeL Eco Plus

Ultra-concentrated essential oil odor neutralizer for wastewater lagoons and collection systems. Binds and destroys odor compounds rather than masking them.

What it is

DAZZeL Eco Plus is a 20 to 1 essential oil concentrate that binds with volatile odor compounds and breaks them down in an irreversible reaction, rather than masking them. It targets sulfides, mercaptans, ammonia and septic odors, and in lagoons it is applied at one gallon of concentrate per acre from the upwind side.

How it works

This is a neutralizer rather than a masking agent, and the distinction is the whole point. A masking agent covers one smell with a stronger one. This binds with the volatile malodorous compounds and breaks them down in an irreversible reaction, so the odor molecule is destroyed rather than hidden, leaving a clean fragrance for up to half a mile.

It targets the compounds that actually cause wastewater odor: sulfides, mercaptans, ammonia and the products of septic conditions. Being formulated from plant extracts, it does not harm treatment biology, which is why a wastewater-specific neutralizer is the right choice over a general industrial deodorant.

What it does not do is change the anaerobic condition producing the gas. That is not a criticism, it is the correct division of labour: this buys you relief and time, and an oxygen source or a loading fix addresses the cause.

These decide whether this product can work at all. If one fails, fix that first, because the money spent here will not survive it.

  1. Be honest about what this is forIt treats the odor, not the source. Bought as a standalone answer it becomes an indefinite recurring cost standing in for a fix.
  2. Know your prevailing windApplication is from the upwind side at several points, so the product carries across the cell. Applying downwind wastes most of it.
  3. Start the real fix in parallelProfile dissolved oxygen and survey the blanket while this holds the complaints down, so the underlying condition is being addressed at the same time.

Is this the right fit

Good fit for

  • Acute episodes when relief is needed now
  • Predictable spring turnover at ice-out
  • Collection systems, lift stations and headworks
  • Bridging the weeks while a biological program works

Not the answer for

  • Substituting for an oxygen or loading fix
  • Reducing sludge or improving treatment
  • Indefinite use as the only odor measure

Dosing and application

Lagoon dose
1 gallon of concentrate per acre, diluted as desired.
Dilution
Dilute up to 20 to 1, or apply as concentrate for the strongest effect.
Placement
Add on the upwind side of the lagoon at several points so it carries across the surface.
Reapplication
Generally every 24 to 48 hours while the episode lasts.
Pack options
5 gallon case of two 2.5 gallon jugs, or a 55 gallon drum. The drum ships by freight.

What to expect, and when

  1. Same dayInitial application. AquaFix's own case work notes the scent is subtle at first rather than overpowering, which is the difference from a citrus masking product.
  2. Two to three daysThe documented pattern is that bad odors diminish over this window while a soft aroma lingers, rather than an instant swap of one smell for another.
  3. OngoingReapply every 24 to 48 hours through the episode, or every three to four days at higher lagoon rates per the manufacturer's case reports.
  4. In parallelThe dissolved oxygen profile and sludge survey that identify the actual source, so this becomes a bridge rather than a permanent line item.

How you prove it worked

Log complaints with date, time and wind direction before and during treatment. That record is both how you measure whether it is working and how you make the budget case for fixing the cause.

Odor is the only lagoon problem that generates phone calls from people who do not work at the plant, and that pressure is real. When a council meeting is Thursday and the wind is blowing toward town, buying relief is a legitimate move, not a cop-out.

The thing to be clear-eyed about is what you have bought. A neutralizer destroys the odor compounds already in the air. It changes nothing about the anaerobic zone producing them, so the moment you stop, the odor returns.

Used as a bridge, that is fine and useful: it holds the complaints down while a dissolved oxygen profile and a sludge survey find the actual source and a biological or oxygen program goes to work. Used as the only measure, it becomes an indefinite recurring cost standing in for a fix. The odor control guide covers the diagnosis that turns the first situation into the second.

Common questions

Is this just a masking agent?

No. A masking agent covers one smell with a stronger one. This binds with the odor compounds and breaks them down in an irreversible reaction, so the molecule is destroyed. AquaFix's own comparison case against a citrus product describes the difference well: the citrus was strong immediately and gone in days, this started subtle and the odors diminished over three days and stayed down.

How much do I need?

One gallon of concentrate per acre as the lagoon rate, so a 5 gallon case covers about five acres per application. A four-acre lagoon in an acute episode may run higher; the manufacturer documents a site using five gallons per acre.

How often do I reapply?

Generally every 24 to 48 hours during an episode. At higher lagoon rates the documented persistence is three to four days.

Will it harm my treatment biology?

No. It uses plant extracts formulated not to harm biology in any wastewater application, which is why a wastewater-specific product is the right choice over a general industrial deodorant.

Should this be my only odor measure?

No, and that is worth saying plainly. It treats the odor, not the anaerobic condition producing it. Use it to buy relief and time, then fix the cause. Odor control guides on this site cover how to find the source before buying the fix.
